A ferry can make an Istanbul ride feel like a proper journey: roll along the shore, cross the Bosphorus and continue from a different neighbourhood without tracing the same roads back. Şehir Hatları’ official FAQ says passengers’ bicycles travel on its ferries without a separate bicycle charge. That statement is specific to services operated by Şehir Hatları A.Ş.; it is not a blanket rule for every Istanbul ferry, private boat or vehicle ferry. A little route checking before you leave is still worthwhile, especially if your plan depends on a particular departure.
Build the ride around the crossing
Choose the piers on both sides first, then check the operator’s current timetable and line information. Look beyond the name of the destination: some services make intermediate stops or run in a particular direction, and a line that looks convenient on a map may not match your riding plan. Timetables can change, so do not rely on a screenshot saved months ago or assume a ferry runs at the same time every day.

What the published bicycle fare information means
Şehir Hatları’ FAQ states that bicycles carried by travelling guests are not charged a fare on its ferries. The passenger’s own ticket is a separate matter and depends on the journey. Do not extend this operator-specific answer to İDO, a private tour boat or another service unless that operator publishes the same rule. If you are connecting between services, check each leg independently.
The FAQ does not spell out a complete policy for every bicycle format, such as cargo bikes, trailers, unusually large cycles or electric models, nor does it promise a dedicated bicycle space or priority boarding on every departure. If your bike is outside the usual size or setup, ask the operator before setting out rather than treating silence on the page as approval. The same caution applies if you are travelling at a very busy time.
Arrive ready to handle your own bike
Give yourself enough time to reach the pier without sprinting for the gangway. Keep the bicycle under control while walking, secure loose luggage and accessories, and follow staff directions when boarding. Avoid blocking doors, stairs or the path other passengers need to use. The published fare information confirms a no-charge bicycle policy; it does not guarantee a particular loading arrangement, a reserved place or a special boarding procedure.
Once aboard, stay with your bicycle and keep it from rolling or obstructing movement. Check for disruption on the day
Weather and technical problems can delay or cancel ferry services. Şehir Hatları directs passengers to its official updates and the ALO 153 customer service line for current information. Check again before travelling to the pier, not only when you first plan the route. If a sailing is disrupted, consider a later departure, another suitable pier or a land-based return.
